0:37 Why did you put reverb and delay in there?
Hey David, would you consider He's a Pirate to be in 6/8 or 3/4?
Sundance is our most symphonic work. In 9/8 rhythm divided in a fractal-like way into 6/8 + 3/8 etc..: https://youtu.be/B_giXhhj2BU
Gravity still sounded like 6/8, because of the beat.
I was listening to the Beatles 'I me mine' and I recognized 6/8 vs 3/4. I was super proud of myself. My thought process started out like this: "That almost sounds like waltz time, but something isn't quite right."

As a long-time brass player, I’ve come across a number of marches written in 6/8, which, while still regarded as two beats to the bar, come across as “ rumpty-tumpty, rumpty-tumpty” ( for example Sousa’s “Washington Post”) while 2/4 marches (like Old Comrades (Alte Kameraden)) are strictly “left, right, left right” rhythms. As far as I am aware, you couldn’t write marches in 3/4 time!
are there any songs with 12 16 time
great video
Patience by the lumineers is the main reason i wanted to understand this difference.
Thanks for this, David. I never understood this until now.
This reminds me of a "difference of opinion" that my wife and I have about the song "Loan me a Dime" by Duane Allman & Boz Scaggs:
SHE swears that the song speeds up, and I CAN hear a bit of acceleration, but I try to explain that the biggest sense of acceleration comes from a change of METER from 3/4 to 4/4 at about 7:48.
What do YOU think?
If you're confused if it's in 4/4 or 3/4… it's 6/8.
This is the most comprehensive summary of the subject I’ve come across. Really well done. Thank you!
I used to be so confused by how these were supposed to be different.
Now I understand that musicians just love to invent new ways to give themselves migraines.
Great video!
makes no sense
Wonderful video and examples. Just so you know, here in Chile we have "cueca" (part of our folklore dance and songs), which is also written in 6/8. One of the most well-known cueca songs is called "La Consentida", maybe you could check it out.
Apparently songs called America like 3 and 6
everything is 4/4 or 6/8 no arguments this is the only true statement
It doesn't really matter to me. If a song has a swing groove it still has a triplature feel
Thank alot… U r the first man explaining without confusion
I've written a song that switches between 3/4 and 6/8 .. but I didn't realize it until later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPC6X5NdOV0
America by simon garfunkel is 4/4
Really Informative. I could stand more of this
I still can't help but see 3/4 as just the much slower 6/8. It still "swings like a pendulum," just a much slower pendulum. They both count with "1-2-3, 1-2-3" the same way, it's just that 3/4 is a slow version of that where each bar is the 1-2-3, and 6/8 is the fast version of that where each bar has two 1-2-3's in it. Having two of them results in the "pendulum comparison," as well as the on-screen visual of "1, 2. 1, 2." But none the less, I still mentally count in 3's (1-2-3) for both time signatures when playing these songs. It's just that for 3/4 I'm counting in 3's by tapping my foot on 1-2-3, and on 6/8, my foot doesn't go that fast, so I'm just mentally thinking "1-2-3" while my foot taps on the screen's version (1, 2)
