i freakin love this machine. It makes me a great espresso. Better than in most cafes in my area
The odd ball machine that I always wanted to have, but cannot justify.
Is is practical for coffee each day? With many many limitations. It looks fantastic. It is kind of a romantic coffee machine. Completely manual in almost every way. An "old" level machine. And I still want one, but cannot justify one.
I wonder if it this romance is why "exotic" machines like the La Pavoni and Atom Coffee machines are still in production. Their are better machine, but there is something about them, just like old cars.
I'm on your side James, if it was made 1993 it's still compromised by corporations that started robbing consumers of value back in the 1970's. Perhaps they were doing so earlier, but it became extremely noticeable in the 70's.
yeah let's not think of '97….. specially after two more years passed >_<
fun fact: James's resting heart rate is 205 BPM.
I bought one of these machines in 2016 for £320. Today the price is around £700. I used it every day but as time went on I began to notice the poor build quality. The whole machine became loose, even the water tank would swivel several degrees on the base and it leaked from almost every joint. Whilst I hardly ever had to empty the drip tray, underneath the drip tray a lot of water collected, I'm still unsure how, and the chrome plated base underneath the tray rusted very badly. In fairness the machine would probably have benefitted from a service (around £150.00). The final straw was when I switched the machine on and forgot I had done so. After several hours the heat element obviously burned itself out. The red light was still illuminated, confirming this was not a power supply issue, but the machine would no longer heat up. Clearly the machine is not fitted with a cut out mechanism which would have saved it from damage, as fitted to all electric kettles, but instead it continues to heat up until the heat element fails. I took it to the tip yesterday and will not be replacing it with another, especially as the price has more than doubled in six years. Beautiful to look at and a delight to use, it's just not worth the money and certainly the build quality is nowhere near as good as many gushing reviewers claim.
Hi James I have a question.. why when I pulled out a shot I release some pressure… but when I pull the portafilter out I still have soma back pressure splashing coffe allover the counter… thanks
Lol. This is still $400 used. Almost $1000 new.
I´ve seen one that comes with a manometer
Thank you. Would you WDT before tamping?
Can you explain in a bit more detail the differences in preparing an espresso with a regular machine, a manual lever machine and a spring-lever machine? And, of course, what is the best way in your experience….
I always wonder what James’ view of the Elektra Micro Casa a Leva. I owned one for many years and they are beautiful machines. Regrettably, I had to sell it because it was expensive to maintain and with two young boys, i needed something a little more stable. I found that the portafilter would unlock during extraction on some occasions and took to holding it in place when pulling a shot. I paid about £800 for a new machine in 2008. I saw the value of new machines shoot up to well over £1k. The shots were never consistent and I found it very unforgiving. I guess it was lack of expertise and the use of a mediocre grinder. I have downgraded to a Gaggia Classic Pro and have enjoyed consistently good shots even with the default pressure (15 bar). I would be really interested on James’ opinion on the Elektra. Is it style over substance or a great machine?
Found a minty one in a thrift shop today for $20. The things people give away. Thanks for the primer on how to use it!
As you mentioned James if you're wanting to entertain it could be doable but challenging I feel you would want at minimum a heat exchanger for that. The purpose of this machine is focusing on that one great shot of espresso quality over quantity.
What are the best upgrades you can make to this machine that actually helps quality of coffee or use.?
This is a $1000 machine
I have now as I write, a brand new La Pavoni Europiccola on the way!
Finally I can start making some proper espresso/café latte!
I use 15-20 minutes making my moka-lattes, nowadays.
Wonder how detailed and perfectionistic my La Pavoni-coffe's will be… 😀
I bought my Europiccola around 1993, a large copper and brass unit that was on sale. I still use it when I want to indulge in the ritual of making espresso. For a quick fix, I use Nespresso original pods.
When I was a teenager we had this machine in our house and I got obsessed with it trying to make the best cup of coffee. I even got into some rabbit hole about water quality. I would always press the puck really really dense because I though the densest it is the better the coffee. I had a great time with this machine. I think the most problematic thing for me was that the espresso was a bit cold. Later on my parents switched it for some Nespresso-style machine which is a shame. I would never realize this is in fact an iconic machine! I think it sits in the some closet gathering dust now. By the way, today I'm a grown up and I just boil my coffee turkish-style which I really like because it produces larger cups of coffee.
