By the way, I think we have seen enough comments stating 'When men were men', 'built by white men' and words to that effect . It only leads to endless, worn-out, irritating debates about the abilities of men versus women, soy boy accusations etc. Do your homework before commenting on the origins of those who worked on the ESB. Why not focus on the way this great building was constructed, how long it might still last for many more years to come and other interesting engineering topics, like discussing the Carnagy beams and riveting versus welding, or talk about what this project meant during the Great Depression?!

What a magnificent structure and the men who built it ,American ingenuity at it's best.
The tools used for designing this structure amounted to Mc/I, VQ/(I x t), and a slide rule; the code of standard practice of the day. Most importantly, it was the skill of the trades, their means and methods, that secured success. No tuned mass dampers here.

A recent documentary stated the construction process was so streamlined that the steel was still hot when it arrived from the foundry.
I bet they did this all on CAD before it was mainstream.

I have no hesitation in admitting that countries like India Pakistan do not have this sort of technology today. Let alone 100 years ago. Workers can be seen wearing hardhats, full length thick jeans, Shoes etc. and no slipper wearing naked guys like India. you can also see how the traffic rules are being followed and a cop is respected by others just like today.
i just realized those rivet holes have to be drilled first, labor was cheap compering with today.
I am proud to be a 4th generation Dockbuilder / Timberman journeyman with local union 1556 NYC , my family has been a part of every single major project in NYC since late 1800s until today. From the Chrysler building to twin towers then world trade and any bridge or tunnel.
Both my son and my nephew will be apprenticing very soon making it 5 gens.
These men are the backbone of this country , we risk out lives everyday so the people of NYC and anyone else the ability to travel safely and fast , love or work and the best built skyscrapers in the world. Technology is great , but it's useless without the people who can use it. God bless them all.
