On February 10, 2015, Suzanne Barakat’s brother Deah, her sister-in-law Yusor and Yusor’s sister Razan were murdered by their neighbor in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The perpetrator’s story, that he killed them over a traffic dispute, went unquestioned by the media and police until Barakat spoke out at a press conference, calling the murders what they really were: hate crimes. As she reflects on how she and her family reclaimed control of their narrative, Barakat calls on us to speak up when we witness hateful bigotry and express our allyship with those who face discrimination.

  1. Chinggis Khan says:

It's those fucking Nazi's. First they went for the Jews, then when that was considered wrong they went for Asian people, then they went for Black people, Then they went for Roma people, and now they're going after Muslims. Jesus Christ it's maddening. The second Conservatives realise this isn't okay, the Nazi's will change the group they're scapegoating. Maybe next time it'll be Buddhists or Rastafarians.

  2. Gabrielus Park says:

Why do Muslims come to Christian countries and talk about discrimination while they enjoys their infrastructure? However, it is treated that way because it is an advanced country such as France, England, and Germany. On the contrary, what would happen if you went to an Islamic country like Iran or Syria, or an Islamic country, sang carols, and dressed as a priest or a nun? Why are you asking for tolerance from other religions when you are not too generous? Have you ever seen terrorism in other religious countries?

  3. pA says:

Since we all have the wrong idea about Islam maybe you could clear the air and share the correct understanding. Your racist claims of "White Men" getting away with things as lone wolves or mentally ill shows youre own ignorance and bigotry. And, may I remind you 9/11 and San Bernadino were done by people who were also educated engineers and architects and not gangsters or rogues. Let me say also though what happened to her brother was absolutely horrible.

  4. Dilara Evran says:

I'm a Muslim, but I've never been discriminated against. I feel so sorry for the people who are going into this situation. It's stupid to see a religion as the equivalent of terror. People are murderers, not religions. We're all Individual. We're free to believe what you want. Religion, sexual orientation, etc. We have to learn to live together. Stop believing in the direction of the media and politicians. Remember, we're all human beings. Stay with love and peace

  5. The Honest Truth says:

i skimmed through the video, and i searched and found the wikipaedia article that said the man was complaining about parking disputes. and theres several evidences from different reports that were made earlier to the police about the parking issue. also according to wikipaedia he didnt like all religions. so this isnt some religious hatred. what he did is definetely wrong, but dont try to pass a propaganda that its some islamophobia excuse.
