So do I get it right, as lungs expand there is more space created that needs to be filled and due to under pressure in the lungs and high pressure outside a flow is created from outside to inside in order to equalize the air pressure? And exhaling is just force applied on the lungs forcing the air to go out?
This is wrong! The air is not doing the work to inflate our lungs! The diaphragm lifts our chest cavity not just to make room, but to decrease the pressure in the chest cavity around the lungs. The atmospheric pressure inside our lungs (from them being connected to the ambient pressure through our mouth) is now higher and will rush in to fill in the space. Our lungs are not muscles that can expand and contract but sacks that get pushed and pulled by pressure gradients.
