this lesson vital. i made such a mess of everything so far. so you leave the armature IN. i also found out how to add the arms..i was twisting them around the neck..i havent done many pieces yet but i do enjoy doing it.
I've been looking for good air dry clay with minimal cracks. I've tried something with air dry clay before it ended up falling apart and a figurine I did start to get cracks. What do you recommend I do to fix it once the cracks happen? Or would you recommend a certain kind?
i certainly have a foundation or mascara i like.
That was great thanks. I really appreciated you leaving in the small errors as it helped me realise that even such a talented sculptor can make mistakes and then move forward.
Great vid thanks for all the info now I can pretend like I know what I'm doing with the kids lol damn covid-19
Its so hard to use it
Does the clay shrink a lot when it dries? I've seen other people mention that you have to be careful with armatures and under structures because air dry clay shrinks and will crack due to the under structure/armature not shrinking with it
This video was sooo helpful ! Thx for sharing ☺️
EXCELLENT! I really felt like I was in an art class
This was really informative and interesting 😀
Really great – so well explained and showed – very inspiring
I don’t have access to wire, is there anything else you can recommend? I’ve used foil as a substitute but I’ve never tried a standing figure with foil
so this is what i'm seeing in those museums. armatures without the sculpture…
Pls give me tips I sculpting with this clay and it's dry while I'm still sculpting
A few points on photography for reference:
* For the wide shots, shoot from as far back as you can. The closer you get, the more perspective aberration you'll get. If you are far back, a longer lens will be helpful.
* Consider shooting from farther back even for detail shots, since perspective aberration can dramatically exaggerate the size of details as well. The large noses and foreheads common in selfies are caused specifically by this kind of perspective aberration.
* For very soft light, your suggestion of window light without any direct sun is good. Other choices include shooting on a cloudy day.
* If you can't manage that kind of light (for lack of an appropriate studio, poor weather for the task, or time constraints, there are a couple of other choices as well. First, you can light a wall like the white wall you have here and use the bounce light to give you a very broad and soft illumination. Second, you can use a large light source like a photographer's soft box. In this case, move the softbox as close to the subject as possible*** to get softer light. Third, you can use a fill light to illuminate the shadowed side of the figure and maintain shadow detail. This has the advantage of being easy to tune to a light balance that works well.
* Consider your background seriously. This is handled well here in the examples, but not really mentioned. You want something with very limited texture and no extra details.
* To get better detail in highly textured areas (as for instance the wrinkles in the face of an older person), use raking light.
* Yes, closer, though that seems counterintuitive to many people. To achieve soft light (smooth transition from highlight to shadow), you need to pay attention to the apparent size of the light source from the point of view of the subject. As a light gets closer it appears larger (subtends a larger solid angle), so the light gets softer. The tradeoff (and there is always a tradeoff in photography), is that you get more light falloff from the areas closer to the light to the distant parts of the subject. This is why professional portrait photographers use very large softboxes, so that they can get large light sources while still staying farther back. As an aside, automotive photographers often use 30 foot by 20 foot softboxes suspended above cars to get incredibly large lights for this very reason.
How relevant this video nowadays. I did not even know about air dry clay until three weeks ago when ceramics professor mentioned it ….as we, students, somehow still have to finish our projects sitting at home ……no lab, no kiln ….now I know…..
This sculpt dry need bake..?
excellent tutorial thank you. I have learnt so much in just a few minutes of following your video
I am trying to make a chess set with Das air drying clay, in a Lund style – which is very detail orientated. Have I bought the wrong type of clay for this type of project?
Ty
Thanks for the wire armature info!!
Only saw this after making a clay mess smh, at least I know for next time
Thank you so much
Thank you this is very helpful. I love the artist’s perceptions.
Awesome! Tyvm!! God bless you
The bloopers at the end really brings out both of your humanity … sometimes in academia while attempting to be professional we lose sight of the fact that we all put our pants on the same way. Great stuff going on here … popcorns on … waiting for the second feature …
Thank you for a great video and detailed explanation. Can you leave the armature in ? I am looking to build a sculpture about 31/2 feet tall. Can you offer any tips ? Thank you in advance !
I like the way you explain how to sculpt. I am going to try your method. Thank you.
Thank you for your explanations! I'm trying to use DAS cold clay, seems to be similar to the one you are using. In my country ( Uruguay) it' s the only one I can get.
Perfect!
Well let’s say I’m making a female figure that’s sitting but must be fired in a kiln? I’m saying this cause I’m working with this clay that hardens fast but must be fired in order for to completely harden
I love how this was explained. Very informative ♥️
