So this one time a company named Union Carbide (now Dow Chemical) made a plant in India, and didn't want to maintain it. To make a cleaning process easier they connected a water pipe to a chemical pipe so they could easily flush the system. Their check valves failed, and water rushed into the chemical tank, creating a reaction that created a hydrogen cyanide gas cloud. 16,000 people died, and countless thousands more were maimed. Children were born with permanent defects, people suffered for their entire lives. Not a single executive faced a minute of jail time for their mass murder.

Union Carbide's actions (now Dow Chemical) were inexcusable. This is mostly moving some money from rich people's pockets to other rich people's pockets with accounting tricks. No one was maimed, no one died.

Always amazing to me how mass murder seems to get less attention than some numbers games.

Crap video, good history up to a point. It fails to point out that USA Waste took over WMI in 1998 and all of WMI's management was replaced. The name Waste Management (WM) was retained and the new management settled the previous managements legal troubles. Arthur Andersen had a history of being the accountant of quite a few companies that failed spectacularly and it was sued out of business.

  3. Jungle Joe says:

Oh, this company is one of the worst in history. It's sickening how they take the name Waste Management when it should be Waste Mismanagement. We don't need land fills. We need composting, turning waste into biodiesel and any and every idea we can think of to stop the contamination of ground water. Biodegradable wastes should be required by federal law to be separated at the source, meaning households and businesses. It's the fault of government and the people in general.

  4. Myke Billig says:

As a non-investor, I see this mainly as a financial crime warranting full investigation & penalties as set out by law. On the other hand, as your common, ordinary, everyday trash-tossing customer, my only concerns include: (1) Are they gathering the garbage effectively, efficiently and on their promised regular basis; (2) Are they holding to their agreed-upon pricing structure; and (3) Are they doing their level best to avoid (further) damaging the environment?
As for any other indiscretions, perhaps theirs is the fabled Mussolini Defense: "Hey, we got the trains running on time!"

  5. thangle13 says:

Waste Management put a law on the books in California to prevent the family that did most of the waste disposal in LA County from 1940s-1990's from being able to buy the land they needed to open a new landfill as their old landfill was being filled/closed. They're scum. But I'm stuck using them, because no one else comes to my neighborhood. Hmmm……

  6. Bethany at Barn Star says:

You should do an investigative journal story about the shipping company called NSD – Non Stop Delivery.

It appears to be some sort of scam company that rarely delivers the large packages, but if they do deliver by chance…it's most likely damaged and dirty. They keep you hanging on for weeks and months by saying they are delivering "today"….only to not deliver at all. Their customer service is non-existent in every way from phone, to email to online chat.

Just check out the online reviews and you'll be left scratching your head about why companies like Amazon and Home Depot use them.

  7. Aoede Lunarei says:

There is a trash company in my town that has jacked up prices to ridiculous amounts. Every competitive company that comes in gets bought out then shut down, while the prices keep rising. The latest competitor who offered services at a far more reasonable price was suddenly privately bought then merged with absolutely no word to city residents and customers. We were all automatically switched back to the main company who is $70 above what the old company did. Our town is now gaining petitions and looking into suing the trash company for monopoly practices

  8. CannonFighter29 says:

Waste Management is another case of a company being too big to fail. This is the problem with monopolies. They can be scummy, they can be immoral, they can be illegal, but they'll never be taken down a peg because of how much money they make.

Little story about Oregon waste company. Around the 1980s if I'm remembering correctly my great uncle Earl owned a private land fill and waste disposal center near the town of Oakland, north of Sutherlin Oregon. The state illegalized private waste businesses, condemned my great uncle Earl's property and Earl was forced to sell the property to the state for cheap, way cheaper than what he could have gotten it for. Now that is a waste transfer site, the Oakland Dump will forever be a shell of it's former glory, no matter if it had glory or not.
