i have a 07 plate 520d e61, 50k on the clock, my first lux car ive owned going from sporty hacthbacks, i love it everytime im in it, great car
You can take it out of park with the key out. Lift the cover from around the gear selector and there is a hole on the left side you can put a screwdriver in and pull back to release park. It is in the manual and used if the car dies and need to tow or pull on to a low loader. Can you guess why I know about that?
All you need is a good ol' F-150 or GMC truck….wait your over there Nevermind….maybe a Raptor?
Bought my 2006 ,e61 530D ,in 2013 flew to Italy to buy it at that time I saved 50,000 sek sold it this year for 52000 sek ( I bought it for €9000 that was 9.50 per sek)
This car Was called futura 240 hp diesel, everything except leather, so 9 yrs i had the car,I bought a 2016, f36 420i, prefer my old car. The e61 is a great car I drive a lot of MB 220 cars the xdrive on my old e61 gives 100 times better handling.
change your oil and filter mate. it will be better then ever. do not flush it, only oil change will not kill it:)
Did the oil change on mine and I personally thought the box wasn’t as smooth afterwards. Was still ok but regretted doing it, suspect I was a little unlucky. My sisters car (same one) had done more miles and felt silky smooth, weird!
I wouldn't buy an e61 ever again tbh…. And I had the 550i. Loved the sound but everything else, no thanks.
Hi Dan, Would you recommend the vacuum brake bleeder?
struggle to maintain 70 up hill on motorways in my EK3 unless I drop it down into 4th, damn eco sh*tbox 🙂 perhaps I'll get an E60 for my next commuter when I'm bored of the EK3 rattles and lack of comfort for 50 miles/day
I got an E61 about same time you got yours. Also got 164000 on the clock. Have just had to sort the turbo out (thrust bearings went), but otherwise been absolutely faultless. Not a rattle or squeak either. Lot of car for the money!
Reminds me a lot of my Vectra C Estate 2.2 Petrol on 165k. All the odd electrical stuff, never missing a beat, pain in the arse suspension jobs and the auto box failing being the thing thats likely to send it to the scrap yard.
I had a garage near me have a go at changing gearbox fluid. I specifically asked if the can do it being a German specialist garage. And they said no problem. They said when I picked up the car that they only got 3 litres out so they only put 3 litres back in but in sounds weird now strange constant noise like gravel. Unhappy.wish I'd left it alone. E82
YES, good car!
My b6 avant has been running strong for 7 years now. still my #1 good car 🙂
Picked up gt7 Dan?
Completely agree about speed on the motorway. I’d guess majority of cars have cruise, I don’t understand why people don’t use it. Does my head in when I try over take in my truck and they then decide to speed up but I’m limited to 56..
The only thing I don't like about my 320d daily is that it's not a wagon. Thanks for the video Dan. Especially enjoy the canine factor.
I would argue it’s one of the most reliable cars. My e60 has been in the family since 2006, and now I have acquired it. It’s currently got 277000 miles, and the engine has never been opened! I can’t think of many cars that can do that.
The dog is amazing, such a good listener.
It's probably worth changing the gearbox oil but I've read stories about the gearbox failing after an oil change – give it a Google – it's probably just a coincidence. I've changed the oil on both of mine a couple of times (C5 Audi S6 and Merc E350) and it's worth doing as a normal service item but read up on the procedure before you do. You have to change the filter as well as the oil and there's a special procedure for refilling, you have to empty oil, change the filter, fill it up, then start the engine, get the box up to temperature, THEN add more oil with the car still running. When the engine is running oil circulates the box and you can put more in. Bit of a knack to it but fine if you do your research before hand and have a proper pump to put the fluid in.
Dan, I do LOADS of motorway miles. M1/18/180/62 some A1M on your patch & quite a bit of A1 as far as Newark ish. Use CC 96% of the time. Always set to 74, seems to be the best speed, can get away with 76, for short distances, to get away from the twats. A1 I do 66, as it's a VW T6 so I'm limited to 60. No speeding tix in the 5 ish years I've been doing it. 63 in a 60 smart motorway limit etc. All good.
Far form perfect, but potentially less hassle than limiting to 70. Keep on keeping on. You Redzz
Ofcourse the 5 is going to be highly rated.
One of the nicest looking Touring wagons ever built.

Hits 2000 : track 10 never forget it.
Glad to see another addition to the 'Good Car' list. I'm currently driving around in your old Volvo, can confirm it still holds its' position on said list. Can also confirm the fuel economy is still absolutely dreadful.
That cruisecontrol complained sounds so relatable. Most of the time it's more comfortable to just drive without it simply because of other people.
Hey Danny, are you planning to go to the Ring with the E46 this year?
I’ve found the best way to have a pleasant motorway journey is to either be the fastest thing, or the slowest thing on it. 65MPH – everyone passes you. 85MPH – your passing everyone. Sitting at 70 – 75 will just cause you to get snarled up with the idiots
I remember back when Mr. Denzel was bought and thought that car was pretty nice. Think this one still compares quite well aside from the early gremlins but I’d have one I must say!
NO ONE can keep a constant speed, on ANY road. I too feel all the pains, Danny.
Mi Band 6 Gang
had a mechanical parking sensor on my old mondeo too, what a feature!
