I think those intersecting parts are perhaps caused by one or two issues.

One being, when you merge the cube at the start, also remove doubles as sometimes it can cause issues if you don't.
The other problem that might also cause it is when using the mirror modifier as it's mirroring from the center point and so creating two versions of the vertex at those points.

I'm not completely sure that's what might cause some of the issues but after giving it some thought, I think it's possible.

    Great tutorial by the way.

On learning anatomy terminology, I think there's particular value to it if you're interested in creating art direct from your head, rather than from references. I've noticed Kent almost always uses references, so he always has that visual prompt where you can see "oh there's this bump here or this divot here, or this crease here" it really doesn't matter if you know what it's called or not. An approach that focuses on memorising anatomy terms isn't so much about having the correct word for the philtrum or the nasolabial folds, it's about having a bookmark in your head that there's an anatomical feature there that you need to include.

A fundamental part of the process of learning to draw or sculpt (especially faces) is about enriching your mental model of the features that are there, going from the simple "two dots for eyes and a line for a mouth" level of abstraction that people often start with (often making the mistake of trying to draw what they think should be there rather than studying what's actually there). There's two broad approaches to that – you can kind of set aside the model entirely and work on accurately interpreting references, and you kind of get an eye for picking up the important features; or you learn the features in detail, so you're more accurate at setting down the features that "should" be there. In practice, of course, everyone does both, but some people seem to prefer one approach more than the other.
