Zero retention grinders are too popular these days, so these companies invented the zero output grinder. Truly innovative. Also the conclusion I came to from watching this and other of James' videos is that that for 50 bucks you should just buy a hand grinder.
James's eye twitch when tasting the espressos. Hilarious.
Have the Cuisinart, the static is a pain, but I clean the whole thing every time I use it. I use the espresso grind but brew it in my stovetop Italian espresso & drink it as an Americano with a bit of evaporated milk so it's strong & I like it.
Jesus, you're snobby dude!
Am I the only one against what this clip says? I appreciated most of the other videos that Mr. Hoffman made, but I think he's missing the point here about cheap grinders. Cheap burr grinders > cheap blade grinders > no grinders at all using pre-ground beans that go bad within 2-3 days. Just being able to use the whole bean, grinding it just before making each cup of coffee IS going to improve the coffee's taste. Mr.Hoffman's comparing these cheap grinders to a pro-grade grinder. Of course they're gonna taste bad comparatively. Cheap grinders do make a lot of people experience a better version of coffee without much initial investment. I think that'll serve well for the community of coffee-lovers. More people getting into our hobby means growth in the market. I started with a cheap burr grinder, actually the same exact Delonghi that's on this video, and now here I am, crazy about coffee more than ever. However, if anybody told me that I had to spend more than $100 on a grinder just to start enjoying coffee, I would've called him/her crazy and pour-over would've been not in my life because I would've judged that they were for snobs only.

Oh no
I just ordered a $50 burr grinder

The one I'm getting isn't any of these brands (Grosche Bremen), so … we shall see? I'm upgrading from a blade grinder, so hopefully it will at least be a step up from that, right?
Wow. WOW.
I keep rewatching this video to see those horrifying shots messing up the whole machine and the platform and Jimmy's face. I always wonder what's happening in his hair. Does the hair get all tingly?
I bought the delongi for under £20, I've still not upgraded but it's definitely not worth any more than that. It's £50 on amazon now, absolutely insane. It does the job if I want an areopress vs a cafetiere but it's not fantastic
I have Krups I got for 57 usd after taxes , I see it’s up to 84usd now just a month later. The sound does not bother me, the static seems to be very minimal after washing it. Yes there is some but I usually make 3 cups, max 5 as that is what my Bonivitta is. I then just dump it straight to filter and rinse it for next day. Would I buy it for 85 plus tax now, not sure. It’s better then the blade grinder I had. Don’t think the average person would want to spend hundreds on one let alone 50 times more.
currently using the Melitta shown here as my uni housemates broke my good grinder, devastating. The Delonghi was my first ever grinder, so it’s somewhat sentimental, awful grinder though.
Thank you for the content! Do any of your reviews discuss higher quality grinders and which might be the quietest?
What espresso machine is that!
I have the delonghi here, it's my first proper grinder (came from hand burr) I exclusively drink aeropress, cafetiere, or cold brew. For my needs it's perfect. Bizarrely I like the style of it, I like edges and the fact that it slots between my wall and microwave like jenga.
Thanks James! 3200 comments!!! no way I can read them all! What can be done to these, or any grinder that produces so much static electricity (besides spritzing the beans with water before grinding)? Grounding foil connected to a properly grounded outlet? Fill all the dead space with concrete? Remove all the plastic and replace with wood or metal? Would love to hack & mod those until all the static is gone. Any ideas?
I enjoy the big chunky clicks in my Cuisinart, personally.
"…if you think i'm drinking that…"
Well, you started by making a video with these low budget burr grinders…so now you have to endure the pain.
The coffee grinders out there aren't all BURR. It's close to ghost teeth. I'm crushing it with that protrusion.
So I have the Cuisinart. It's terrible. Finer to courser, it always puts a build-up of fine coffee at the top and sides, so you have to brush out the finer stuff to get to the actual grind you want. The static is awful, and it's SO LOUD. Definitely looking forward to upgrading. These cheap grinders are not worth it, just go with a cheaper blade grinder or a more expensive burr grinder
Awesome review as always sir James! Would be fun to see you try out the 600N grinder. Its a 60mm flat burr grinder. And it costs..wait for it… less than 40$ here in the Philippines. Would love to see if you'll be maddened or impressed by its performance haha a lot of small cafes here apparently use it.
If all you do is make filter coffee, these grinders are just fine. A few seconds of grinding noises just isn't that big a deal. For most people the biggest improvement in coffee quality is going to come from grinding fresh. Most people don't care about accurate dosing. They just want a cheap grinder that gets the job done, and these do just that. I used a cheap blade grinder for years and I thoroughly enjoyed the coffee I made with it for a long, long time.
So what would be a good grinder to start with that won't break the bank?
"I once bought one for a friend. Am about to find out how bad I feel about that."
Love your sarcasm, sir!
I know someone with the delonghi who makes a really nice cafetière with it, using a surprisingly fine grind and not a lot of brew time. Lots of fines but they almost become a feature like in Turkish coffee. I've never replicated it at home but always enjoy the strong and slightly grainy cup
